Okay, so basically a sestina is long complicated format that involves mostly specific repetition. This is the first time I've done one, so it's a little... awkward? I suppose. Anyways, enjoy, and thanks for reading!
On the first white square sits a dark king,
His queen next to him, content to wait.
Far across the lands, at the other end,
There lies a foreign kingdom, just out of sight,
An enemy, of course,
On the opposite side.
Pawns line up one by one to take their sides,
So that the game can play its course;
It will come to a bloody end,
It’s the only answer in sight.
On each throne sits the one and only king,
Each with a conscience bearing too much weight.
It won’t be long before one tires of the wait.
And then one piece here, one piece there, by order of the king,
It isn’t long before the other catches him in his sights.
He’s started a war that is difficult to end,
There must remain a monarch on only one side
One victor, according to the laws, of course.
It is a treacherous course,
With only a checkered battle site.
But loyal soldiers they are, they wait.
They take and give, following orders of a king.
He doesn’t even see the other side,
And it’s the subjects who must bring it to an end.
It won’t take years to reach that end
But hours at the least until the end of a side.
Only one color can win, of course,
Only one victor can own the site,
There can only be one to bear the weight,
Of ending the reign of another king.
The battlefield will forget the man, the king
Again and again. Another one lines up in his place to wait
For one to set his greedy sights
On another board, another side,
There is no real victory in this course,
To these battles there is no end.
When one king falls and meets his end,
There is of course, only a short wait,
Before another side will again, set their sights.
